HISTORY

Born in 1981 in a nature-rich area of Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, I grew up in a family engaged in dairy farming. Spending my childhood surrounded by cattle and nature, I played in vast landscapes, experiences that became the foundation of my creative work. Through helping with farm work and working closely with soil and water, I became fascinated by the inherent power of materials and developed a deep sensitivity to the essence of nature. This experience remains deeply rooted in my ceramic practice today.

At art university, I specialized in ceramics, studying both art and craft. After graduation, I encountered many ceramic artists and researchers and was deeply inspired by Japanese and Chinese antique pottery. Over time, I came to believe that the value of a piece is not determined by its age or novelty but by the essence of the material itself.

After graduating, I dedicated myself to creating both objects and tableware. In 2013, my wife Fumika and I established “Suigama,” where I have been producing my own works while also contributing to the studio’s tableware production. In 2023, I began making unique daruma figures as a way to further explore my artistic expression. Drawing on my extensive knowledge and experience in ceramics, I strive to bring out the inherent beauty of my creations, continuously exploring expressions that bridge past and present, nature and human life.

CONCEPT

“Tearing apart the old, breaking through the present”—This Zen phrase embodies the idea of not being bound by the past, breaking free from it, and not being confined by novelty. The essence of quality lies always in its fundamental nature.

While respecting the techniques and aesthetics of the past, I do not allow them to constrain me. Instead, I seek the strength to create what is truly needed in this era. In my work, I cherish the forms and spirit of the past while transcending them to draw out new sensations and possibilities. By discerning the essence of things and breathing life into each material, I strive to create works that connect to the future.
