Oribe Daruma
・Oribe Daruma
Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, where I live, has a 1300-year history of ceramic art. I have created a Daruma featuring Oribe, the iconic green glaze that represents this historic region.
Oribe ware emerged in the Momoyama period, deeply influenced by the aesthetics of the tea ceremony. Its signature style embraces distortion and spontaneous transformation, values that resonate deeply with me. In this Daruma, I have merged its timeless form with the fluid, organic expression of Oribe glaze. The variations in color and flow that arise during firing are beyond complete control, yet they embody an unrestrained beauty—one that aligns with my philosophy of “Tearing through the old, breaking into the now.”
This Daruma serves as a bridge between tradition and the fleeting beauty of the present moment. Within its quiet presence, the enduring spirit of Oribe lives on.
