Brush-Stroke Daruma
・Brush-Stroke Daruma
The swirling patterns on this Daruma were created using a traditional Japanese technique, where white clay slip is applied with a brush made from bundled straw. This method, rooted in ceramic traditions, is one I often use in creating tableware. The brush’s movements introduce an element of spontaneity, while the contrast between the white slip and the clay body lends the piece a natural depth.
The dynamic patterns evoke the rhythms of nature, such as flowing wind or water, while the stable form of the Daruma symbolizes tranquility. These contrasting elements come together harmoniously, embodying a coexistence of motion and stillness.
This Daruma represents a new challenge for me—applying a familiar technique to a symbolic form. By combining tradition with a contemporary perspective, I aimed to create a work that showcases the beauty of materials and explores new possibilities in ceramic art.
